Working Principle & Sedimentation Process

1. Slurry Feeding & Flocculation

The raw mineral slurry enters the central feed well, where an automated flocculant dosing system injects coagulants. The polymer flocculants bind fine suspended particles into larger aggregates (flocs), significantly accelerating the settling rate compared to natural gravity precipitation.

2. Sedimentation & Mechanical Raking

As the solid particles rapidly settle to the bottom of the tank, slowly rotating thickener rakes continuously scrape the concentrated sludge toward the central discharge cone. Integrated PLC torque sensors monitor sludge density and trigger an automatic rake lifting mechanism if overloading occurs to prevent clogging.

3. Underflow Discharge & Overflow Water Recovery

High-Density Underflow: The thickened sludge is pumped out from the bottom cone for subsequent vacuum disc filtration, filter press dewatering, or dry tailings stacking.

Clarified Overflow: The clear liquid rises to the top, overflows into a perimeter launder, and is recycled back into the mineral processing plant for immediate water reuse.

Operating on the principle of gravity sedimentation, it separates fine solid particles from liquid in a settling tank. Flocculants are introduced into the feed well to accelerate particle aggregation, allowing clear overflow water to be recycled while concentrated sludge is discharged from the bottom cone.

The primary difference lies in the driving mechanism and tank size: Central Drive Thickener: The driving mechanism is mounted on a central bridge or steel truss, ideal for small to medium-sized tanks (typically under 30 meters in diameter). Peripheral Drive Thickener: The drive motor travels along a perimeter rail on the concrete wall, designed for large-diameter tanks (30 to 100+ meters) handling massive slurry dewatering volumes in large open-pit mining operations.

During heavy ore thickening or sudden power outages, high-density sludge can accumulate at the bottom, creating extreme torque on the rakes. An automatic rake lifting system equipped with PLC torque monitoring automatically raises the rake assembly when resistance exceeds safety limits, preventing mechanical breakage, motor overload, and tank clogging.

Adding polymer coagulants via an automated flocculant dosing system neutralizes particle charges and binds fine suspended solids into larger, heavier flocs. This dramatically accelerates the settling velocity, increasing the throughput capacity of a high-efficiency thickener by up to 300% compared to natural gravity settling without chemicals.

A deep cone thickener features a tall cylindrical structure with a steep cone bottom, maximizing sludge bed compression. It typically achieves high underflow concentrations of 50%-70% solids by weight. This paste-like sludge is ideal for direct pumping to a filter press for tailings dry stacking or underground paste backfill.
